TED COATES APPOINTED TO HEAD UTILITY'S NEW WHOLESALE BRANCH

SEATTLE, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Seattle City Light Superintendent Roberta Palm Bradley has appointed Ted Coates to head the Wholesale Branch of the nation's seventh largest utility.
The appointment, which followed a nationwide search, completes Superintendent Bradley's senior-executive-level reorganization, which reduced the number of deputy superintendents from four to two in an effort to streamline functions and improve customer service. The re- organization saves ratepayers about $500,000 per year.
"The electric utility industry is undergoing fundamental changes, and wholesale power markets are more competitive than ever before," Bradley commented. "Ted Coates brings the long-range vision, leadership ability and understanding of the power supply system that Seattle needs to maintain the value of our customer-owned system in the future."
Coates was selected by a 13-member panel composed primarily of the employees who would be reporting to him. The process, similar to the one used to select Retail Branch Deputy Barbara Harvey-Brayton in June, continues Bradley's commitment to involve employees in critical decision- making.
Coates, who holds a degree in economics, also pursued undergraduate studies in engineering and post-graduate studies in economics. Most recently he directed strategic resource planning for Seattle City Light.
As head of Seattle City Light's Wholesale Branch, Coates will manage 750 employees responsible for all power generation, wholesale marketing, and transmission functions, including power systems construction and maintenance, power management, energy resources planning and forecasting, engineering and operation of the utility's Skagit and Boundary hydroelectric projects. His appointment will become effective on Sept. 1.
