TECHNOPHONE ADDS CELLULAR NOTEBOOK LINK FOR COMPAQ COMPUTERS

MELBOURNE, Fla., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Technophone Corporation now offers a Cellular Notebook Link for use with its new PC 415 hand- held portable telephone and COMPAQ notebook computers and portable PCs. The Cellular Notebook Link provides a fax/data interface consisting of an intelligent cable linking Technophone's PC 415 cellular phone with any Compaq computer equipped with the new COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 Modem. The phone and modem are designed to send and receive data and fax transmissions over the cellular network.
Designed exclusively for use with the Technophone PC 415 and COMPAQ notebook and portable PCs, the Cellular Notebook Link is a coiled cable with a quick-release data cradle that holds the phone while in the fax/data mode. When used with the COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 Modem, the Cellular Notebook Link transmits data at a carrier speed of 4800 bps, and when used with data compression, data throughput of over 11,000 bps can be achieved. It sends and receives fax transmissions at 9600 bps.
The unique design not only eliminates the separate interface box required in most mobile data installations, it also lowers the overall cost of mobile computing. There is no need (or expense) for an external battery because the cellular phone's battery and the computer's internal power source work together to support the interface.
"The combination of Technophone's knowledge of wireless communications and Compaq's leadership in portable computing has produced the missing link mobile data customers have been asking for," said Lorie Strong, Compaq vice president for portable and software marketing, PC division.
The Cellular Notebook Link is available from cellular carriers and authorized Technophone dealers.
