Building an E-Latin America

Hundreds of years ago, the Incas, Mayans and Aztecs used the most advanced tools of their day to build their mighty empires. Today, businesses throughout Latin America are using 21st Century technology to extend their domains. Sales of laptops, desktop computers and servers in the region were the highest ever in 2000, according to IDC. The international consulting firm reported more than 7.7 million units shipped in Latin America with a total value of $9.29 billion.

Lower prices and aggressive financing options for consumers were among the reasons for the rise in sales, said IDC. "The year ended on a very positive note, and few vendors should have complaints with their performance in Latin America," said Jay Gumbiner, PC market analyst for IDC Latin America.

Turning to the fast-growing e-commerce market, the U.S. research firm eMarketer forecasts a 600% increase in Latin American sales by 2004 - primarily in business-to-business (B2B) transactions. "With its sizeable population heavily concentrated in large cities, Latin America's potential for e-commerce remains vast," says Craig Sender, eMarketer spokesman. "All countries will see impressive growth in e-commerce revenues over the next few years."

Sender adds that online B2B sales will account for an increasing share of total e-commerce revenues, rising from 79.8% in 2000 to 87.8% in 2004. "Businesses of all sizes, as well as national and local governments, will increasingly do their procurement online," he adds. "The region's industrial sector will benefit considerably from the cost savings associated with B2B online purchasing."
