TEAMSTERS TURN DOWN SDMI OFFER

 TEAMSTERS TURN DOWN SDMI OFFER
TRACY, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Specialized Distribution

Management, Inc. ("SDMI"), the management firm hired by Safeway, Inc. (NYSE: SWY), to operate its new 1.8-million-square-foot grocery distribution center in Tracy, announced today that they are extremely disappointed to hear that the current Safeway employees have overwhelmingly rejected SDMI's contract proposal.
 SDMI released the following statement:
"The SDMI proposal provided for an offer of employment to all current Safeway employees affected by the opening of the Tracy distribution center, at $16.00 plus per hour (approximately $34,000 per year not including overtime). Over a period of time these rates would have increased to $17.82 per hour ($37,000 per year). The rates and benefit package offered are comparable to what they are currently making in the Bay Area, and surpass any in San Joaquin County.
"The Teamster leadership has stated repeatedly over the past several months that offering employment to all current Safeway employees, at competitive rates, were the issues. For the most part, the majority of the contractual language had been agreed upon during meetings with the Teamsters over the past two weeks.
"Given the overall package it is difficult for us to understand why the Teamster leadership did not recommend the proposal.
"Since we have the responsibility for getting the Tracy center operational by May 1 (less than three weeks away), we will resume hiring approximately 75 people per day beginning Monday morning, so that the necessary training can be completed in time for the opening. We have some 26,000 applications for the 630 positions that remain to be filled, including those applications from present Safeway employees.
"In spite of today's vote, it is still our intention to offer employment to a number of the current employees at the Safeway Fremont and Richmond distribution centers as well as those employed at the San Leandro milk plant."
