TEAMSTERS MEMBER FROM WASHINGTON STATE DELIVERS 200,000 'TEAMSTERGRAMS' TO WHITE HOUSE HEALTH REFORM PANEL

Union Calls for One National Plan for All,
Regardless of Employment, Age, Income or Health Status
WASHINGTON, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, Teamsters rank- and-filer Dwight Schultz, from Bellingham, Wash., told Vice President Gore that his health insurance nightmare has convinced him that only a single national health plan can produce the true reform Americans need.
Schultz met with the vice president on Tuesday as part of a delegation of citizens whose personal experiences illustrate the crisis in the health care system. The group delivered approximately 1 million messages of support for a single payer plan from people all over the country. Schultz presented Gore with samples from the 38 cartons of "TeamsterGrams" that were delivered to the White House in connection with the meeting. The TeamsterGrams call for a single national plan that is available to all regardless of employment, age, income or health status.
Schultz, whose insurance provider reneged on a promise to cover the cost of his life-saving liver transplant, spent six months battling for his life and, at the same time, waging a struggle with the insurance company and state agencies to save his family from financial ruin. During the six months that his surgery was delayed, his life was in peril. He was in and out of the hospital, sometimes unconscious and in a coma for extended periods, while the company refused to help.
Eventually, through the intervention of his union and state legislator, the operation was performed. He is still battling his insurance company, which is trying to get out of paying for the prescriptions that prevent his body from rejecting his new liver.
"No family should have to go through what ours went through," Schultz told Gore. "We need national health insurance that will control costs and make it possible for families to survive medical emergencies."
