TEAMSTERS ANNOUNCE LUCKY STORES BOYCOTT; FIGHT FOR FAIR SHARE OF CHAIN'S SPIRALING PROFITS TARGETS 50 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SUPERMARKETS
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Saying they are ready to fight for a fair share of profits that resulted from their members' labor, northern California Teamsters today announced that a statewide consumer boycott of Lucky Stores will begin Saturday, Aug. 15, unless negotiations produce a new contract they can recommend to their members.
Approximately 1,300 Teamsters at three northern California distribution centers have been working without a contract since May 1. Talks to reach a new agreement have stalled, as Lucky has refused to budge from a series of sub-standard contract offers that contain a virtual wage freeze and significant reductions in current health and welfare benefits, maternity leave provision, pension benefits, holiday and vacation standards and shift differentials.
"Our members are ready to fight," Teamster official Chuck Mack said today during a news conference at state Federation of Labor headquarters in San Francisco. "They are left with no other option. Like all workers in the grocery industry, they are caught in a 'greed squeeze' applied by their employers.
"We are sick and tired of seeing companies like Safeway and Lucky try to squeeze concession after concession out of their workers by crying poor when everyone knows they're making money hand over fist," continued Mack. "We've had enough. Lucky wants a fight and we're prepared to give them one they'll never forget."
Casey Sawyer, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 490 in Vallejo and chair of the union's Northern California Grocery Committee, said the affected workers have not had a raise in five years and only one raise in the last eight years. Meanwhile, since 1989, Lucky has seen its corporate sales increase by 10 percent to $20.1 billion; its after-tax corporate net earnings rise 69 percent to $199.4 million; and its earnings per share increase 66 percent. During that same period, the real earnings of Lucky workers have dropped by more than 27 percent.
Sawyer said workers throughout California are being asked to boycott Lucky Stores until the dispute is settled. Leafletting will begin Saturday at 50 of the chain's northern California markets unless a tentative agreement is reached before then. Talks are scheduled to take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, according to Sawyer.
