TEAM AER LINGUS WINS TOP INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AWARD
NEW YORK, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- TEAM Aer Lingus, the aircraft maintenance and overhaul subsidiary of Aer Lingus -- Ireland's national airline -- has won a major international award from the Environmental Protection Agency of the U.S. government, it was announced today by the airline.
The 1991 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award relates to the innovative Halon 1301 recycling equipment launched by TEAM Aer Lingus in May of this year. "HAL," as it is known, is a unique system of recycling potent halon gases contained in jet engine and aircraft fire extinguishing systems. This gas is one of the most potent of all CFCs and is a major contributor to the ozone depletion phenomenon currently troubling the earth's atmosphere. Traditionally, when aircraft halon systems were overhauled halon gases were released into the atmosphere. The HAL system withdraws and stores these gases during repair and overhaul procedures and allows also the withdrawn gases to be re-used without releasing any into the air. This system therefore not only reduces the destructive effects of halon on the atmosphere, but also reduces demand for this expensive material.
TEAM Aer Lingus Chief Executive Terry MacManus said this award was a tribute to the innovative and creative talents of the workforce and reflected Ireland's concern for keeping its environment "green." "We are constantly updating our technology seeking to develop product lines and systems that will be both productive and environmentally friendly," he said.
The award will be presented by the E.P.A. this evening in Baltimore to representatives of TEAM Aer Lingus.
(TEAM Aer Lingus maintains aircraft for airlines throughout the world and employs 2,000 staff at its Dublin Airport, Ireland, headquarters facility. The company's present capacity for this work consists of 11 aircraft maintenance bays and 40 workshops, in one of Europe's largest hangar complexes.)
