TEACHERS HECKLE BLUNKETT.

ANGRY teachers heckled Education Secretary David Blunkett yesterday as he outlined his determination to press on with pay reforms.

The clash came at the National Union of Teachers' conference in Brighton where delegates were expected to approve a ballot on striking against the introduction of performance-related pay.

He told them: "To talk of strike action is simply daft. It's daft because we are at the beginning of a process, not the end. Children deserve better than us as a Government and you as a profession knocking hell's bells out of each other."

As teachers shouted: "Bring back the Tories", Mr Blunkett said: "What is the teaching profession coming to if I say that things are improving and you heckle me for it?"

He later described his visit as "interesting".
