 TCI RELEASES ECONOMIC STUDY DETAILING
 CONSUMER IMPACT OF CABLE LEGISLATION
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Tele-Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: TCOMA, TCOMB) today released a preliminary study done for it by economist Carl Ellis Hunt which predicts cable legislation, now pending in Congress, will cost America's cable customers over $4.00 per subscriber, per month.
Citing the difficulty of predicting the future impact of such legislation, Hunt's study notes the confidence interval for his report is between $2.69 and $6.28 per subscriber per month. Hunt did not include in his estimates a number of cost factors that could increase the consumer impact of these bills even more.
J.C. Sparkman, TCI executive officer, said, "These are shocking figures, disastrous for our customers, if these bills were to be signed into law. They clearly justify the $2-$4 per subscriber estimates that we have made, based on our internal studies."
Bob Thomson, TCI senior vice president, added, "We asked Mr. Hunt to approach this task very conservatively, utilizing publicly available data and looking critically at figures we have generated internally. We must point out, as Mr. Hunt does, that abiguities in the legislation, institutional uncertainties and marketplace factors require that broad 'confidence intervals' be used in such projections. However, the sheer magnitude of these projections are very alarming. We will continue to stick with our predictions that consumer bills will increase from $2-$4 per subscriber per month until other companies and relevant federal agencies release definitive projections of their own."
The company noted it was releasing the Executive Summary of Hunt's report today and the complete report later in the week.
Tele-Communications, Inc., is traded in the NASDAQ market with Class A common stock and Class B common stock trading separately under symbols of TCOMA and TCOMB, respectively. In addition, the company's liquid yield option notes due 2008 are also traded in the NASDAQ market under the symbol of TCOMG.
