TAY ENGINES ORDERED FOR BRITISH MIDLAND'S NEW FOKKER FLEET, ACCORDING TO ROLLS-ROYCE

RESTON, Va., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Rolls-Royce is to supply Tay engines for a new fleet of Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 regional twinjets for British Midland (BM), Rolls-Royce said.
The engine deal, including spare engines and maintenance support through the company's East Kilbride factory in Scotland, is worth approximately $105 million.
The deal renews links between Rolls-Royce in Derby and the airline -- based at nearby East Midlands Airport -- which began in the 1970s and 1980s when Rolls-Royce Dart and Spey engines powered Fokker F27, Viscount and BAC One-Eleven aircraft operated by BM.
British Midland will next year begin operating four Fokker 100s, powered by Tay 650s, and five Tay 620-powered Fokker 70s in 1995. The aircraft will be used on key domestic and European routes, where the Tay's efficiency, high reliability and low noise signature will provide large operational benefits.
The Tay incorporates many of Rolls-Royce's advanced technology features including the wide-chord fan blade. It has accumulated more than 2 million flying hours in six years and experienced the most reliable entry into service of any engine.
It has proved even quieter than expected, making the Fokker 100 the quietest jet airliner in its class.
Rolls-Royce, through its Aerospace and Industrial Power Groups, is a world leader in gas turbine engines for aviation, marine and industrial use; power generation and oil and gas industry products.
