TAV JV awarded Salalah airport Duty Free deal.
ATU Duty Free, a joint venture between TAV Airports and Unifree Duty Free/Gebr. Heinemann, has been awarded the tender for the ten-year operation rights of duty free stores at the newly developed Salalah International Airport in Salalah, the second largest city in Oman.
ATU Duty Free will begin operations from January 2015.
ATU Duty Free general manager Ersan Arcan said: "Salalah Airport will become an important port in the Middle East with its 6mn passenger capacity. The rapid increase in the number of passengers strengthened our confidence in Oman. Our contract is for the management and operation of duty free, retail and food & beverage concessions at Salalah Airport.
"We will provide services in this airport together with TAV subsidiaries BTA, which is the Group's F&B operations arm; and also TAV Operation Services."
The new terminal at Salalah Airport is due for opening soon, with an initial capacity of 1mn passengers per year. It has, similarly, been designed to allow for subsequent phased expansion in line with demand, with an ultimate annual capacity of 6mn passengers.
Hosting around 747,000 passengers in 2013, Salalah Airport's expansion is part of a strategic aim to further develop Salalah as a tourist destination. Located 1,000km south of Muscat and with a much cooler climate during the summer months, it is considered as a tourist destination with huge potential.
