MINNEAPOLIS, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The following information was released today by Target Stores:

The doors to the new Target Stores in Woodbridge (Potomac Mills) and Fredericksburg, Va., will open to guests Sunday, March 10. They are the first Target Stores on the East Coast and represent the company's introduction to the Mid-Atlantic market. Target plans to open 28 stores on the East Coast this year.

Target Stores, the largest division of Dayton Hudson Corporation (NYSE: DH), is the third largest discount retailer in the country and is opening 75 new stores in 1996. Target's goal is to deliver great value to its guests by providing high-quality merchandise at low everyday prices, in stores designed for convenience and distraction-free shopping. Target has established a tradition of referring to customers as guests because of its emphasis on excellent service.

"Target is excited about entering the Mid-Atlantic market and the entire East Coast," said Gail Dorn, vice president of communications and community relations for Dayton Hudson Corporation and Target Stores. "We are looking forward to being an active partner in the community."

Target serves guests from a broad spectrum in its communities, but its most typical guests are active families. The stores have a wide variety of merchandise -- from the basics of household necessities to the hottest trend items.

Each store will employ approximately 150-250 people and contribute $200,000 a year to each local economy through the purchase of services and supplies from local businesses.

In keeping with its long-standing tradition, Target will announce plans for several community involvement programs in the Woodbridge and Fredericksburg area as the new stores open. The Target stores will also establish a Good Neighbor Volunteer Program, Target's grassroots volunteerism program that encourages and supports employee volunteer projects that meet a specific need in the community.

Hours for the new stores are Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Minneapolis-based Target Stores is a quality discount retailer. On March 10, 1996, Target will operate 688 stores in 34 states coast to coast. It is the largest division of Dayton Hudson Corporation, one of the nation's leading retailers.

For more than 30 years, Target has contributed 5 percent of its pretax profits to the communities in which it does business through grants, special programs and team member donations. With a focus on strengthening and enriching family life, Target gave more than $25 million back to communities nationwide in 1995.
