TARGET CONTRIBUTES ORNAMENTS FOR THREE STATE TREES AT NATIONAL TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Target will help Americans celebrate a 70-year-old Christmas tradition this year by providing ornaments for three state trees on the "Pathway of Peace" on the Ellipse across from the White House in Washington.
The "Pathway of Peace" is 57 decorated live Christmas trees representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia and six U.S. territories. The living trees are transplanted each year especially for the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and the Christmas Pageant of Peace, a three-week pageant of music and lights.
The pageant is a means of emphasizing America's desire to maintain peace around the world through the spirit of Christmas. It is a tradition that began in 1923 with President Calvin Coolidge and has since become a national symbol of Christmas and the brotherhood of man.
The one-hour ceremony begins at 5 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 9. President Clinton is expected to light the National Christmas Tree, a 38-foot live Colorado blue spruce, and the 57 surrounding smaller trees. Target is providing ornaments for the state trees representing Arkansas, California and Minnesota.
The state trees will each be decorated with unique handmade ornaments depicting the specialties of the state they represent.
This year's pageant theme is "Unity," which stresses the importance of community and working together in a land of diverse peoples.
The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will feature celebrities including dancer-entertainer Sandy Duncan, country singer Charley Pride, entertainer Phil Driscoll, television weatherman Willard Scott, The United States Air Force Band and the D.C. Choral Kaleidoscope Choir. For children, characters such as Fred Flinstone, Barney, Yogi Bear, Snoopy and Garfield will round out the program.
Minneapolis-based Target Stores is a quality discount retailer. By year-end 1993, Target will operate 554 stores in 32 states coast to coast. It is the largest division of Dayton Hudson Corporation, one of the nation's leading retailers.
