TAPPI Kraft Recovery Short Course.

January 7-10, 2002, Caribe Royale Hotel, Orlando, Florida, USA

Course overview. The Kraft Recovery Short Course is designed to increase participants' knowledge of chemistry, physics, and engineering principles relating to kraft recovery, as well as increase their ability to improve pulp production efficiency while minimizing operating costs and environmental problems. Specific topics include recausticizing and lime kiln; black liquor evaporation; condensate stripping, noncondensible gasses and soap; and recovery boilers.

Course participants are encouraged to bring questions and specific problems to the experts! In addition to the faculty, mill recovery superintendents and managers will provide practical day-to-day information through workshops held each day of the course. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, the Kraft Recovery Short Course offers participants the opportunity to work in teams to solve practical operating problems. Teams will solve problems and present their results to the class.

Learning outcomes. After successfully completing the course, participants should be able to:

* assess recovery boiler problem solving options

* analyze black liquor evaporators and make recommendations for improvement

* evaluate kiln performance

* analyze NCG handling and condensate stripping and make recommendations for improvement

* formulate or upgrade boiler corrosion inspection programs

* identify causes and solutions for recausticizing problems

Course chairman. Professor Doug Reeve, chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto, is the short course chair.
