TAMPA ATTORNEY WINS $5.3 MILLION AWARD AGAINST CIGNA SECURITIES
TAMPA, Fla., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Guy Burns, senior partner in the Tampa office of Johnson, Blakely, Pope, Bokor, Ruppel & Burns, P.A. has just learned that he has won a $5.3 million award through an NASD arbitration proceeding against Cigna Securities, Inc., Cigna Individual Financial Services Company, Dennis J. Stearns, Jan E. Mercedes, and Mercedes Stearns & Associates. The award was rendered on behalf of Burns' client, George H. Gage, former president and chairman of GTE of Florida.
The award was for violation of the anti-fraud provisions of the Florida securities law, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, gross negligence, negligent supervision and common law fraud. The award included $3.5 million in punitive damages against the Cigna defendant for their willful, wanton and methodical schemes to deceive Gage.
It is believed that the award is one of the largest ever granted in a securities arbitration proceeding and represents the largest single punitive damage award ever received.
