TAMBRANDS TO REMAIN INDEPENDENT; ANNOUNCES 42ND ANNUAL DIVIDEND INCREASE

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Tambrands Inc. (NYSE: TMB) announced that its board of directors, which held a regularly scheduled board meeting today, has decided unanimously that the company will continue to operate as an independent entity.
Howard B. Wentz, Jr., chairman of the board, stated, "As part of a comprehensive review of Tambrands' strategic alternatives, over the last several months we explored the possibility of a sale of the company. We reviewed the strength of Tambrands' business and prospects worldwide, and carefully examined the alternatives to maximize shareholder value. The board decided that the best course is to continue to run the business independently." Wentz added that, with today decision, the company expected to announce its new top management structure in the near future.
At today's meeting, the board of directors also voted to increase the regular quarterly dividend on the company's common stock from 38 to 42 cents per share, a 10.5 percent increase. This is the forty-second consecutive year that the company has increased its dividend. Tambrands' increased quarterly dividend will be payable on Dec. 15, 1993 to shareholders of record on Dec. 7, 1993.
Said Wentz, "Our business continues to be highly profitable and we have an exceptionally strong balance sheet. The board and management are confident in the future of a strong and independent Tambrands. Increasing our dividend reflects that confidence. Very few companies can match our record of 42 consecutive annual dividend increases."
