TAKE A STRIDE FOR LIFE; Join in the battle to beat one of the biggest killers of women in Wales.

Byline: Peter Bibby Community Affairs Editor

IT'S one of the biggest killers among women in South Wales - but together we can help to fight it.

Breast cancer claims the lives of around 8,000 women a year in Wales, with almost 2,000 new cases diagnosed in the last 12 months.

The good news is death rates have dropped by almost a quarter in the last decade.

But that is mainly because expensive research has come up with improved treatments and earlier detection among victims.

The Echo is today joining forces with Cancer Research UK to help raise even more money to fund the continuing drive to find a cure for breast cancer.

But we can only do that with your help - by taking part in the first ever Echo Stride for Life.

The 10-kilometre (six-mile) sponsored stroll this autumn will take place through the gardens of Bute Park in the centre of the city.

Open to individuals and teams, but particularly families, it's a chance for the ordinary people of South Wales to do their bit in the battle to beat breast cancer.

All the money raised by the event will go to Cancer Research UK Cymru to directly finance vital research pro-jects into the disease. The date for your diary is Sunday, October 6, starting at noon.

The route for the walk has not been finalised, but will take in much of Bute Park and the Castle Grounds.

Anyone of any age can take part in the walk, but we're looking for as many Echo families as possible to join in. The entry fee for adults is pounds 6, children under 16 must pay pounds 3.

Event organiser Kim Jones said: ``The Echo Stride for Life gives families and friends the opportunity to do something positive for research into the cause, prevention and cure of breast cancer.'' To sign up for the Echo Stride for Life, please fill in the application form below and send it to: Echo Stride for Life, Kim Jones, Cancer Research UK Cymru, Hamilton Court, 373 Cowbridge Road East, Cardiff, CF5 1JF.
