T.O. TO HELP BUY $38,000 VEHICLE FOR CITY MANAGER.

Byline: Cecilia Chan Daily News Staff Writer

City Manager MaryJane Lazz will soon be parking a $38,000 Chevrolet Tahoe next to the motorcycles in her garage, thanks to the city's taxpayers.

The City Council is scheduled Tuesday to vote on purchasing the pewter gray sport-utility vehicle for Lazz, who earns $140,000 a year. The city will pay nearly $23,800 to Courtesy Chevrolet, the lowest bidder, with Lazz reimbursing the balance through payroll deductions. The city also will pay registration fees, insurance premiums and the costs of servicing and refueling the SUV.

``I think overall (Lazz) is being very well taken care of,'' Mayor Linda Parks said. ``The contract itself is lavish but it's an indication of how council members appreciate her.''

Lazz did not return phone calls.

Lazz will have unlimited use of the four-wheel-drive vehicle, which will have heated leather driver and passenger seats and a home-link programmable transmitter ordered as part of an $1,800 ``comfort and security package.''

City Attorney Mark Sellers, the only other Thousand Oaks administrator to get a city-financed car, drives a Chevrolet Suburban.

Under city policy Lazz's vehicle will be replaced after five years or when the car reaches 100,000 miles. And if she leaves her city job, she can buy the vehicle at its Kelly's Blue Book value.

Nick Quidwai, an unsuccessful council candidate and frequent critic of the council, disapproved.

``She gets paid $140,000 with all those extra goodies,'' he said. ``The fringe benefits are just horrendous.''
