 T. BOONE PICKENS HELPS CELEBRATE PRODUCTION OF NATURAL GAS VEHICLES
ORLANDO, Fla., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Peoples Gas and Texas businessman T. Boone Pickens will join forces with GMC Truck and the American Gas Association in a natural gas vehicle (NGV) "Drive It To Believe It" celebration on Aug. 7, 1992.
The celebration, designed to introduce Florida fleet owners to clean burning NGVs and the new GMC Sierra full-size pickup truck, will be held at the Orange County Convention/Civic Center. The chairman of the Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition, T. Boone Pickens, will be the guest speaker during lunch. Guests will attend the luncheon and either a morning session or an afternoon session.
Each guest will be offered an opportunity to test drive a Sierra truck, which is the first pickup manufactured specifically to operate on compressed natural gas. Most other NGVs in the United States previously had been converted to operate on both gasoline and natural gas. Other presentations will include discussions on the benefits for businesses to operate NGVs and the impact of the federal Clean Air Act on businesses.
During the 1992 model year, GMC Truck built and sold more than 2,000 natural gas Sierra trucks. Some funding for program development and promotion came from the American Gas Association and Peoples Gas.
In Florida, Gov. Lawton Chiles in late 1991 signed Executive Order Number 92-253 that calls for all possible state vehicles to use the most efficient, least-polluting alternative fuel. A natural gas vehicle emits 85 percent fewer pollutants than one fueled by gasoline.
About 1.5 million natural gas trucks and automobiles are expected to be on the nation's roads by the turn of the century. Peoples Gas, the state's largest natural gas utility, currently services 17 natural gas fill stations across the state. Peoples Gas plans to open 14 more stations in Florida by 1993.
