Syrian President Hails Iran's Role in Fighting Terrorism.

Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Syrian President Bashar Assad lauded Iran's role in helping the Damascus government in its ongoing fight against the terrorist and extremist groups.

"Iran's support for Syria in all fields, particularly in fighting terrorism, contributed to the successes achieved by the Syrian Arab Army against terrorism," President Assad said in a meeting with the Chairman of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharrazi in Damascus on Sunday.

The Syrian president said that the victory over terrorism in Syria and Iraq, along with Iran's resilience in the nuclear issue, foiled the plot devised for the region that sought to fragment its states, violate their sovereignty, and seize control of their independent decision-making.

Kharrazi, for his part, congratulated President Assad and the Syrian people for the victories achieved against terrorists, the most recent of which being recovering Abu al-Dohour airport, voicing confidence that more achievements will follow both on the political and military levels.

Kharrazi stressed the importance of Syria and Iran's continued exchange of views as well as their close cooperation in encountering foreign conspiracies, saying that the Syrian-Iranian harmony played a positive role in this regard.

In relevant remarks on Wednesday, Syrian Parliament Speaker Hamoudeh Sabbagh appreciated Iran for its assistance to his country in the fight against the terrorist groups, stressing the need for Tehran to play a key role in the reconstruction of the war-torn Arab state.

"Major plots had been hatched for Syria which were foiled through cooperation between Iran and Syria. Iran supported Syria in the most difficult and darkest days. This assistance and relations should continue in all fields and the reconstruction process should proceed in a way that Iran will be one of the main partners for the reconstruction of Syria," Sabbagh said in a meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader's top aide for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati in Tehran.
