Synovus Expands into Augusta; New Office Marks Synovus' Entry into Growing Georgia Market.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Synovus (NYSE: SNV), the Columbus, Georgia-based diversified financial services company, today announced that its Georgia-based Athens First Bank & Trust has expanded into the Augusta market by opening its first office under the trade name Augusta First Bank & Trust. Athens First has adopted the legal name AFB&T to support this and future expansions. "By leveraging the resources of our Athens First team, Synovus will be well positioned to build a new network of customers in the thriving Augusta area. We have a talented and experienced team in place to offer our Augusta customers a responsive and professional banking team that is able to offer an extensive array of products and services." E[acute accent]Augusta First Bank & Trust has opened a temporary location at 3716-A Executive Center Drive and will initially operate as a loan production office. By November, additional branch banking services will be available and by February 2006, Augusta First will operate as a full-service branch offering a complete range of integrated financial services, including banking, trust, brokerage, insurance and mortgage. Additionally, Augusta First is in the process of identifying other sites to serve as permanent branch locations in the Augusta area and anticipates having two full service branches by late summer, 2006. Tattnall "Tat" Thompson, IV, a Waynesboro native with 35 years of banking experience in the Augusta market, has been selected to oversee bank operations as City President. Jody F. Patton will serve as the bank's Vice President for Commercial Banking. Patton began his career with SunTrust and has served as a commercial real estate lender since 1998.
