Synod on the word of God.

FROM ANTHONY PITTARELLI

In a previous letter (see C.I., June '08, p.5), I reflected on the crisis of the Sacrament of Penance and hoped the Synod on the Word of God would get to the root of the problem.

Those who participated in that Synod meditated on the whole Bible. Pope Benedict XVI told us to take up and read the letters of Saint

Paul for a whole year. The apostle Paul emphasized the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. That is the underlying theme in his letters. The Spirit of the Lord transforms each of us by degrees, into his likeness (2 Cor. 3:18). "Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him (Rom. 8:9)."

Initial conversion (metanoia) should be followed by transformation (metamorphosis) (Rom. 12: 2, Greektext).

At the conclusion of the Pauline year, Pope Benedict proclaimed the Year of the Priest and promised to publish a handbook for confessors and spiritual directors.

Growth in the love of God is the aim of both Penance (Reconciliation) and spiritual direction. Penance can also justifiably be named the Sacrament of Transformation.

A priest can be a confessor granting absolution and also a spiritual director. A layperson can only be a spiritual director (Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 2690).

Spiritual direction is a dialogue between the director and the directee to discover God's will for the future. Ultimately the director withdraws, but the directee continues to ask for and receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the real director of souls.

God actually communicates with human spirits to bring them closer to maturity. ...
