Symyx Technologies Introduces Automated Excipient Compatibility System for Use in Pharmaceutical Development; New Offering Accelerates Formulations Testing of Drug Candidates.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Symyx Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:SMMX) today announced availability of its new Excipient Compatibility system which accelerates important steps in the drug development process for the pharmaceutical industry. Earlier this month, Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc. purchased a Symyx Tools system with both forced degradation and excipient compatibility configurations.

Excipient compatibility studies are part of the preclinical evaluation of drug candidates, testing how compatible potential ingredients are with an active drug molecule. These studies enable scientists to determine the optimal formula for drug stability and effectiveness. Leveraging Symyx's expertise in high-throughput research, research software and systems development, the Symyx Excipient Compatibility system automates excipient compatibility testing, utilizing robotics to dispense materials, mix solid powders, dissolve materials and extract and analyze the drug. The system enables pharmaceutical customers to increase the accuracy, speed and consistency of excipient compatibility studies.

The Symyx Excipient Compatibility system is based on the Symyx Extended Core Module, a modular robotic platform that enables customers to easily configure systems in the field to meet their specific chemistry needs. In addition, Symyx Software drives the system automation, enabling experiment planning, execution and data analysis and storage. The Symyx Excipient Compatibility system can be integrated with other Symyx Tools including systems for evaluation of Preformulations Crystallization, Solubility, Liquid Formulations and Process Optimization.
