Switzerland ravaged by floods and landslides.

BERN: Floods and landslides caused by torrential rain wreaked tens of millions of pounds in damage and disrupted road and rail traffic in much of the country yesterday.

With parts of the historical capital Bern and other towns submerged under water, local officials prepared for mass evacuations from the worst affected areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Lakes in central Switzerland, already swollen by melted snow from an exceptionally severe winter, rose to record highs. Barge transport on the mighty Rhine river between the German city of Mannheim and Bern was suspended because of the record water level.
