Switching gears.

After seven years as a commercial lender, Michael V. Perch got tired of watching many of the small businesses he helped finance grow into large corporations. So, in 1988 the Florida A&M University graduate decided to launch his own company - Corporate Presentation Services Inc. (CPS), a full-service conference management firm that specializes in audiovisual and video production.

Perch and his 31-year-old wife, Sandra, took $25,000 in personal savings along with a low six-figure loan to start their Tampa, Fla.-based company. Since then, CPS has evolved into a fully integrated service that has helped IBM Corp., the National Football League (NFL) and the National Society of Black Engineers stage conferences. The seven-employee company addresses all aspects of corporate conferences from planning workshops to designing programs.

Perch, along with his staff, has organized more than 150 full-scale conferences ranging from audiovisual support to full conference management responsibilities. "My experience as a banker has been invaluable to my business," says the 31-year-old president and CEO.

That business savvy helped Perch increased CPS' sales from $66,000 in 1989 to $370,000 in 1991. He expects revenues of $650,000 by year-end and hopes to top the seven-figure mark by 1993.

Perch's crowning achievement came in 1990 when he clinched a $100,000 deal with the NFL for Super Bowl XXV - the company's biggest and most lucrative deal.

CPS recently opened an office in Atlanta and is negotiating with the Centers For Disease Control and General Services Administration.
