IN the UK, figs are happiest fan-trained against a sunny, warm wall, although they will grow well as a bush in a container in a sheltered spot.
The variety Brown Turkey is reliably hardy - it ripens in late August and vitamin and fibre-rich fruits have a reddish-brown skin, red flesh and a sweet flavour.
When planting a fig in the open ground, it is a good idea to restrict the root run so the plant puts all its energy into producing fruit rather than new growth.
Figs have the potential to reach ten metres, so the traditional way to plant is to construct a pit 45cm deep and line walls with 60x60cm paving slabs stood upright.
