Byline: The Register-Guard

SWEET HOME - Linn County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a Sweet Home man who fell while trimming a tree.

Deputies responded to R & L Excavating on Crescent Hill Road in Sweet Home at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday after being notified by Sweet Home Fire Department personnel of a fatal tree-trimming accident.

Deputies learned that 59-year-old Raymond Launder, was trimming trees with a friend, Richard Paulino, also 59. Paulino told deputies that Launder was in a fir tree approximately 50 feet off the ground.

Launder was wearing a safety harness but had apparently detached the harness to move to a different location in the tree. Paulino said he heard Launder yell, turned around and found him lying on the ground and unresponsive. Sweet Home Fire officials pronounced Launder dead at the scene.

Paulino described Launder as an excellent tree trimmer, and deputies found no malfunction with Launder's equipment.
