The Swedish medical board has decided that Norlevo, a medication used as an emergency contraceptive pill, is to become available without prescription from 2 April this year.
The medical board has emphasised that the pill is an emergency solution and should not be used on a regular basis, while also taking view that it is important that the pill is freely available. The pill protects against 95% of unwanted pregnancies when taken during the first 24 hours after unprotected sex while the rate is down to 58% if taken on the third day, according to Dagens Nyheter, a Swedish daily newspaper.
