Sustainability rules for biomass energy systems.

DO you own a biomass energy system? New 'land criteria' requirements will make it compulsory to source sustainable biomass fuel if you want to claim payment under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

The RHI was created to encourage investment in renewable energy and help the UK meet its target for 15% energy demand from renewable sources by 2020.

If you own a biomass system, and want to claim under the RHI, then from spring 2015 you must demonstrate that the biomass fuel meets certain sustainability criteria, including a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions target.

All owners of domestic systems will need to use a Biomass Suppliers List to source sustainable fuels and those with a non-domestic system will need to either use the approved list or self-report to Ofgem.

In the case of wood fuel, the new 'land criteria' specify that wood fuel must originate from legal and sustainable forest sources.

The new requirements will ensure that biomass energy systems contribute toward UK energy and carbon targets; while biomass systems offer generous savings on fuel costs, the added financial benefit of the RHI is what makes biomass such an attractive investment opportunity. GMI Energy has continually advocated sustainable biomass fuel, recommending clients to source locally, research the extraction process and support sustainable land management.

It is reassuring to see the Government taking steps to encourage others to think about where their fuel has come from.

Many of our clients come to us because they are looking for a cheaper heating alternative and with the RHI we have seen returns of 30% or higher. The added benefit that biomass can also cut carbon is helping farmers and businesses from various sectors compete in a market that demands increasingly stringent carbon targets from its supply chain.
