Suspect Calif. college program to be audited.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Department of Finance is gearing up for an audit of a community college program that allows high school students to earn college credit.

Gov. Gray Davis called for the audit after a newspaper reported fraud, improper funding and intimidation of students in the program.

He has also proposed cutting $80 million dollars from the concurrent enrollment program, which is designed to offer college-level courses that aren't available through some high schools. Some students travel to college campuses for the courses, while others take college-level classes at their high schools.

However, an investigation by the Orange County Register found that the physical education classes offered al some high schools had no academic content whatsoever. The Register also reported that the classes didn't always meet and that some students said they were coerced to enroll.

In another investigation, The Sacramento Bee reported that some classes at the Los Rios Community College were only offered to high school students. Concurrent enrollment courses must be made available to all members of the public to receive state funds.
