Surgeries for hearing-impaired children conducted in Kyrgyzstan for first time.
A cochlear implantation for children with hearing problems is introduced in Kyrgyzstan for the first time, said the director of the National Center for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood Kamchybek Uzakbayev at a press conference in Bishkek on November 15.
There are 27,400 children with disabilities in Kyrgyzstan, and the number of children born with disabilities is growing, he added.
"There are many children born with hearing problems. According to statistics, 150-160 children are born deaf and dumb. Now it became possible to correct hearing with a cochlear implant. This is a special device that is surgically implanted," Uzakbayev said.
The price of one cochlear implant starts at 25,000 euros and more modern from 40,000 euros, said director.
At this time, the Lenhardt Foundation brought cochlear implants for 6 children to Kyrgyzstan for free, Uzakbayev said.
"The foundation will help to provide cochlear implants to Kyrgyzstan on a preferential basis. Special attention will be paid to children from low-income families," he noted.
"We executed operations for 2 children on November 14, 3 more will be have operations today, and another 2 operations are planned for tomorrow. These children have congenital hearing impairments, with the exception of one child whose hearing problems began after meningitis. We will connect the implant speech processor to all those operated in a month. It is necessary for the implant to get accustomed," said the head of otorhinolaryngology department Cholpon Beisheyeva.
