Surge of U.S. troops helped Iraq's stability - Petraeus.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Head of U.S. Central Command said that the surge of U.S. troops in Iraq, decided by former president George Bush led to a social stability in Iraq and decreased violence in the country, according to Bloomberg News.

"The surge was really a surge of ideas as much as it was a surge of forces," David Petraeus said on Thursday. War violence in Iraq is down 90 percent from the spring of 2007, he said.

Petraeus was speaking at the conference held by Bloomberg Ventures, a unit of Bloomberg LP, parent of Bloomberg News.

Former president George Bush had decided in early 2007 to increase the number of U.S. troops in Iraq to face violence in the country.
