Yue (earth surface modeling, Chinese Academy of Sciences) describes the high-accuracy surface modeling (HASM) method he devised to solve the problems of high error rate and slow computational speed that has kept geographical information systems from being used in many important applications. The first section sets out principles and methods, with chapters on such aspects as comparative analysis of various HASM algorithms, adjustment computation of HASM, and a basic approach of HASM to dynamic simulation. In the rest of the volume, he explains how to use it to model environmental components of the earth's surface, among them population distribution, human carrying capacity, changing trends of food provision in China climate change and scenarios, and soil properties.
