Supreme Beef failed four salmonella tests.

Supreme Beef Processors Inc. failed a fourth set of salmonella tests just before the company declared bankruptcy, according to Tom Billy, administrator of the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. At a recent meat advisory committee meeting, Billy said previously the company had failed three sets of tests over a period of several months. That pattern prompted an unsuccessful attempt by regulators to shut down the Supreme Beef plant by withdrawing federal meat inspectors. In a closely watched court case Supreme Beef earlier challenged USDA's HACCP food safety standards saying the carcasses came from USDA inspected slaughterhouses and thus, already were approved by the government as safe. USDA also said it was preparing to issue a proposed rule extending the salmonella tests to U.S. turkey plants.
