YEAH! WHAT A GREAT STORY!

HEY, I WONDER IF THERE WERE EVER ANY SPIES WORKING IN CANADA.

I DON'T KNOW. LET'S SNOOP AROUND AND FIND OUT!

What's a Spy?

A SPY IS SOMEONE WHO COLLECTS AND REPORTS INFORMATION ABOUT AN ENEMY OR COMPETITOR. MOST SPIES LEAD DANGEROUS, DARING LIVES. THEY RELY ON A NUMBER OF SKILLS IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THEIR MISSIONS WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT.

SPYING CALSO CALLED ESPIONAGE) HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS. ALL OVER THE WORLD, NATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS HAVE USED SPIES TO STEAL ENEMY SECRETS. AND SOME OF THESE SPIES HAVE OPERATED RIGHT HERE IN CANADA!

Web of Spies

CANADA'S FIRST OFFICIAL SYSTEM OF SPIES WAS FORMED IN THE 1860S. AROUND THAT TIME, A GROUP OF IRISH AMERICANS WAS PLANNING TO ATTACK THE COUNTRY. THIS GROUP BELONGED TO A SECRET SOCIETY CALLED THE FENIAN BROTHERHOOD. THE FENIANS WERE FIGHTING FOR IRISH INDEPENDENCE. THEY FELT THAT INVADING CANADA WOULD HELP THEIR CAUSE.

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT DIDN'T AGREE! IT TOOK ACTION BY CREATING A WEB OF SECRET AGENTS TO KEEP TRACK OF FENIAN ACTIVITIES. LUCKILY, THESE SPIES WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE GOVERNMENT WITH ADVANCE WARNING OF THE FENIANS' PLANS.

Wartime Growth

WHEN THE FENIAN THREAT ENDED, CANADA'S ESPIONAGE ACTIVITY SLOWED DOWN. BUT IT STEPPED UP AGAIN IN WORLD WAR I (1914-1918) AND WORLD WAR II (1939-1945).

DURING BOTH WARS, CANADIAN SPIES WORKED TO TRACK DOWN ENEMY AGENTS OPERATING IN CANADA. AND BY WORLD WAR II, CANADIAN AGENTS WERE ALSO OPERATING OVERSEAS. MANY WORKED BEHIND ENEMY LINES, SABOTAGING GERMANY'S WAR EFFORT AND SENDING OUT VITAL INFORMATION.

CANADIAN AGENTS ALSO PLAYED A BIG ROLE IN INTERCEPTING AND DECODING ENEMY RADIO MESSAGES DURING WORLD WAR II. (CODEMAKING AND BREAKING CAN BE ONE OF THE TOUGHEST JOBS FOR ANY SPY!)

Agency Action

MOST SPIES WORK FOR ORGANIZATIONS CALLED INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES. CANADA HAS HAD SEVERAL SPY AGENCIES OVER THE YEARS. THE FIRST WAS THE WESTERN FRONTIER CONSTABULARY, FORMED IN 1864. THE DOMINION POLICE TOOK OVER FOUR YEARS LATER. THEN, IN 1920, THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE TOOK CHARGE OF THE COUNTRY'S ESPIONAGE ACTIVITIES. IT CONTINUED IN THIS ROLE FOR OVER 60 YEARS.

TODAY, CANADA'S CHIEF SPY AGENCY IS CALLED THE CANADIAN SECURITY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE (OR CSIS). IT WAS FORMED IN 1984, AND ITS HEADQUARTERS ARE IN OTTAWA.
