Sunday outings into the Palm Springs mountains ... join with fellow cyclists.

An efficient network of bike lanes makes it easy for Palm Springs residents and visitors alike to get around. But look to the mountains above the resort city for bike adventure. Every Sunday ftom now until May, you can join other enthusiasts or a free pedaling tour.

The exhilaration rivals that of mastering a mogul field on a downhill ski"We do it for love of the outdoors-and a good workout," says Dan Vail of the Desert Off-Road Bicycling Group, a Palm Springs club.

All you need to join Vail's group are a mountain bike (your own or rented), a helmet, water, and a good night's rest. Some routes wind along narrow dirt paths; others climb wider fire roads. On longer rides, bikers have sometimes spotted bighorn sheep and coyotes. Routes, vary weekly. The toughest ones are best left to well-conditioned bikers.

For beginners, an hour-long warmup ride follows an easy, partially paved route. Afterward, more rugged individuals head out for 2 to 3 hours in the mountains. Spectacular views reward the climbs.

Meet at 9 A.M. at Mac's Bicycle Rental, 700 E. Palm Canyon Drive. Rental bikes are lined up in the open lot across from Westward Ho Hotel and Denny's restaurant. Watch carefully for the rental site's small white sign with orange lettering; if you reach the Biltmore entrance heading south, you've gone too far. Mountain bike rentals run $6 per hour, or $25 per day. For rentals or information, call Mac's (open 9 to 5 daily) at (619) 327-5721.
