Sunday concerts at Aspen's restored opera house

When it was built in 1889, Aspen's Wheeler Opera House was the tallest building in town and represented the pinnacle of cultural efforts in the valley. Because of strict height limits, it's still the tallest building downtown, and thanks to recent renovation, it's once agains the cultural heart of the community.

Used by both touring and local theater and dance groups since its reopening in May 1984, the Opera House has kept increasing its schedule. Now the Sunday concert series has doubled, with both jazz and classical performances.

Concerts begin at 7:30 P.M. in the 488-seat Victorian-style theater. Performances this month and next are as follows:

February 16, cellist Yehuda Hanani and pianist Jeannette Kim. February 23, Buddy Rich band. March 2, Delos string quartet. March 9, pianist Dave Grusin and guitarist Lee Rittenour. March 16, pianist Misha Dichter. March 23, Handel's Messiah, by the Aspen Community Chorus.

Reserved-seat tickets cost $9 at the door or up to two weeks ahead at the box office. The opera house is at 320 E. Hyman Avenue.

Weekdays by appointment, you can see the $4.5-million restoration on free guided tours. Call (303) 920-2268.
