Sun Capital eyes Walkabout chain; TAKEOVER.

Walkabout bar chain Regent Inns could fall into private equity hands, according to reports yesterday.

US buyout specialist Sun Capital Partners has emerged as the frontrunner to buy Regent, which first reported takeover approaches in January.

Sun Capital, which owns businesses such as Lee Cooper jeans, is ahead of nightclub operator Brook Leisure in the race for the business, reports said.

Regent also owns the Jongleurs comedy clubs and Old Orleans restaurant business, as well as the Australian-themed bar chain.

But a deal for the pounds 16 million chain is said to be some weeks away amid tough times for the pubs and restaurant sector as the economy turns downwards.

Regent has 63 bars in its Walkabout and Jongleurs estate, and another 31 Old Orleans sites.
