| Make the best use of high ceilings with a four-poster or a canopy bed frame. It lifts the gaze and makes a room feel spacious, as well as luxurious. It also makes the bed the focal point, which it should be.
| Get a modern look by not overloading the bed frame with drapes. Keep them bare, like in this room, or, if that's too stark, twist muslin cloth around the bars.
| Choose slim-framed furniture to make the most of space in smaller rooms. It doesn't have to be the bed, you could try an open-frame clothes rail for a stylish, casual feel.
| Go for tiles on the floor for a really fresh, contemporary look. They work beautifully in light, spacious rooms. Pick slick, contemporary furniture to complement them though - anything too fussy will clash. Add rugs for warmth because cool tiles in the bedroom can be trying on bare feet. A snuggly, deep-pile rug is a lovely contrast to a geometric tiled floor.
| Be daring with accessories. We love this vintage-looking Roman bust, used as a jewellery stand - or a hat stand. | Save money on statement bedding by going for a beautiful bedspread or blanket, which you can use over the top of a cheaper, plain white duvet.
| Inject flashes of bright or mustard yellow in the blue and white to add a sunny warmth in among the cool tones. | Contrast different patterns and shades of blue - from light on the walls, bright on the furniture and navy on the floor.
| Consider blinds on windows, especially if the ceilings are high or the room is quite small. Roman blinds which go up in folds, as in the picture, can be recessed into the window so they take up little space.
