Summer study guide 2002.

With Sugar Plum Fairy season behind us, it's time to start thinking about summer-especially if you'd like to spend a portion of it in a summer dance intensive. To help you with your plans, we've compiled our annual list of schools and companies that offer in-depth dance training during those summer months. Whether you're looking for a festival that offers all types of dance along with chances to see internationally acclaimed artists perform or are in the market for a program that focuses only on classical techniques, you'll find a variety of options here. Our listings cover both national and international summer study programs and provide information on how and when to apply, whether scholarships or room and board are available, and other details. (Be sure to check the symbols key next to the listings to find out what each symbol stands for.) Once you've narrowed down your list of possible programs to attend, Colleen Payton's story about the different facets of five prestigious summer schools may help you make your final decision. She gives more information on schools that offer both summer and year-round study and offers advice on what to consider when searching for the program that's perfect for you. In addition, Iris Fanger reports on DanceLab, Boston Ballet's newest summer offering. It's a more personal program that includes individual coaching, guidance on making a great audition video, help with dance resumes, and more. Enjoy the guide. We hope it will help you find the summer experience that's just right for you.

ONE-ON-ONE ATTENTION

Boston Ballet's DanceLab stress mentoring, not competition

BY IRIS FANGER

One day last July a group of day-camp children were playing ball on the large, grassy field that centers the campus at Mount Ida College, located in suburban Boston, but inside a nearby building the mood was less relaxed. A dozen ballet students had gathered around their instructor to watch her demonstrate the intricacies of unfurling a fan to enhance one of the solos from Don Quixote. The teacher was a former Boston Ballet principal dancer, Laura Young, who had performed the role of Kitri many times. "I once dropped the fan onstage," Young told them. "I learned to tie the fan to a piece of elastic around my wrist." Chances are these students had not been exposed to this kind of up-close and authoritative coaching back home.

Welcome to DanceLab, Boston Ballet's newest summer program, designed to nurture adolescent women by mentoring them in a protective atmosphere with an emphasis on individual learning and preparation for the professional world rather than the competitive sizzle of the company's larger Summer Dance Program. Young, who also serves as the principal of the Boston Ballet School, founded DanceLab because, she says, "I've always wanted to have one teacher take the class all the way through the session. The teacher and student would get to know each other very well. The teacher could see the strengths and weaknesses of each student." Besides Young, the instructors included former Boston Ballet soloists Denise Pons and Deirdre Myles Burger.

The in-depth training program featured daily ballet technique classes, pointe and variations classes, Pilates workouts, and two mentoring classes of only ten students each week. Although Young hoped that the students would take "time to reflect on what they learned during the day," she says, master classes were scheduled for some evenings. Weekend activities included trips to Jacob's Pillow and Saratoga Springs to see performances. Housed in the dorms at Mount Ida, the students came to DanceLab from states as far away as California, Florida, Oklahoma, and Oregon, as well as New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

The eighty-five young women who launched the program in 2001 worked with the same ballet teacher every day and were coached in variations to be presented on their final videotapes. The students had access to computers and guidance in writing resumes. "Instead of a closing performance, each student made an individual videotape, shot by a professional crew. In addition, we gave them a stage makeup class for the video and still photos -- a head shot and a dance photo. We taught them what makes a good dance shot," said Rachel Moore, a former dancer with American Ballet Theatre and now executive director of Boston Ballet's Center for Dance Education, which oversees the company's three schools, its summer programs, and community outreach division.

Apparently, the students agreed with the goals that Young established for DanceLab. The evaluations at summer's end ran the gamut from liking "how you corrected everything on everyone, not just one person," and "helping me overcome my bad habits and technique" to "My teacher inspired me so much?" to "I felt I've gotten to know how my body moves better." Another dancer wrote that she "found courage."

It's not only geography that separates DanceLab from the Boston Ballet's regular Summer Dance Program, which is much larger, co-ed, and geared toward the student ready to look for a job in the field. "The Summer Dance Program, which is based at our South End studios in the city, is a very different experience," Moore said. "Like many other summer dance programs, it teaches varied styles (modern and Spanish dance classes plus ballet) with a rotating group of teachers. By virtue of an older age group in SDP, there is a different level of competition. At ages 17, 18, or 19, you're jostling for your first job. The students in DanceLab are ages 13 to 15, although we will admit certain younger ones to SDP as well," Moore said.

SDP has led to company contracts, via BB II, the second company, for a quarter of the dancers in the Boston Ballet. Former students have also been accepted into many other troupes, including New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, and Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. More than 300 students attended the 2001 SDP, including 32 boys. SDP students come for three- or six-week sessions. DanceLab is a five-week program.

"The big difference for summer 2002 is that DanceLab will be in our new studios," Young said. DanceLab moves into the remodeled studios of the Boston Ballet School -- MetroWest Studio, not far from Mount Ida, where the students will again be housed. They will be bused to classes every day. Classes will run for two hours each, another change.

The $1.5 million upgrade for the Boston Ballet School -- MetroWest Studio provides five high-ceilinged, state-of-the-art dance studios, dressing room facilities that include lockers and showers, and an improved lounge area as well as offices and an enlarged parking area. "We turn away so many students for Summer Dance Program after the auditions. DanceLab is a way to use the suburban studios in the summer and offer places to certain girls who might have been turned down for SDP," Moore said. "Last summer the parents heard `nurturing' and `safe' atmosphere and really responded."

When Young was a teenager, many of the American ballet companies were in their infancy. She studied with E. Virginia Williams, founder of the Boston Ballet, at the time when Williams was making the transition from running a group of well-regarded schools and a regional ballet company to starting a professional troupe. Williams picked Young to join the company and served as her mentor, guiding her progress from the corps de ballet to leading roles. Young went on to dance under other directors, but Williams gave her what DanceLab girls gain. "The DanceLab students have learned things they can use for the rest of their careers," she says.

FINDING THE DANCE PROGRAM THAT FITS

BY COLLEEN PAYTON

For many teens, summer means relaxing days by the pool. But thousands of serious young dancers spend their summer vacations in the studio working harder than ever. Intensive summer training sessions are a great way to try out new teachers and styles--or to delve more deeply into the technique you enjoy most. They can also give you a feel for what rigorous conservatory training is like. Indeed, some young dancers use summer programs to sample schools they might want to attend year-round.

That's true for 12-year-old Jane Yoon. The fact that she was shopping for a great summer program that might also become her year-round school made her choice especially exciting and challenging. "I know I'm choosing good places to audition," said Yoon, "but sometimes it feels like I'm just going by the pictures in brochures. I'm glad my parents helped me figure out what I really want. All schools have hierarchies and things that go on under the surface. I'd like to know in advance if those things are ones I can handle, or maybe even ones I'm looking for. How competitive will it be? Will I make friends easily?"

Whether your main interest is a great summer experience or a long-term program, deciding where to go can be a daunting task. There are many wonderful schools and programs that differ widely. Becoming familiar with their different focuses and offerings will help you find a program that meets your goals and interests.

At Idyllwild Arts Academy, for example, the emphasis is development of the individual through the arts. Summer programs for students in every age group are offered: ballet, jazz, tap, and theater dance, among an abundance of other art forms. Situated in the mountains above Palm Springs, California, the academy's curriculum concentrates on classical technique and artistic expression. All dance students take courses in ballet, modern, and jazz. Says Tia Dixione, a graduate of the year-round program, "It's not competitive. It's all about inspiration. I'd like to get into a company, but there are a lot of other things I'm planning, too. The teachers here give you the tools you need to make it." Most graduates of the year-round program go to college and into a variety of careers.

According to William Lowman, the headmaster, "Idyllwild students are highly individualistic. They represent a cross-section of the world, but they share one important character trait: a burning desire to do something different with their lives." Students view themselves as valued members of an artistic community and explore multiple avenues for self-expression. Nearby Los Angeles, a forty-five-minute drive away, provides opportunities for year-round students to view performances and enjoy the city.

Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan is distinguished by its affiliation with the University of Michigan and its 1,200-acre rural setting. Although more than 2,000 students attend summer camp, just 100 are dance majors. The rest study creative writing, music, theater, and visual arts. Dancers live in cabins with students from any or all of these programs, and in addition to dancing five to six hours per day, engage in a variety of outdoor activities. The focus of the dance program is modern and ballet, with courses in improvisation, composition, and repertoire. For school-year students, the academy offers an outstanding academic education to students in grades three to twelve. Distinguished alumni include Tom Hulce, who played Mozart in the film Amadeus, and Tom Rawe of Twyla Tharp Dance.

Summer dancers are involved in two performances during each four-week session. (There are two dance sessions each summer.) The school also hosts prominent guest artists during the summer who perform and offer master classes.

The Kirov Academy of Ballet offers a more urban experience. Located in Washington, D.C., the school shares facilities during the summer (swimming pool, residence hall) with nearby Trinity College. The five-story building contains two large, world-class studios and three smaller ones, air-conditioned dormitories, a library, a Pilates studio, a costume shop, and classrooms.

Of the approximately 280 dance students who attend summer school, 10 percent continue in the year-round program. There are classes in ballet (Vaganova method), pointe, character, Spanish, hip-hop, jazz, and, during winter months, Russian. SAT scores of students graduating from the in-house academic program are high, averaging between 1100 and 1300, and most graduates go directly into dance companies, Executive Director Michael Beard said.

The school is unique in its affiliations with the Maryinsky (Kirov) Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Universal Ballet. Many Kirov Academy graduates have gone on to dance with the Universal Ballet Company or to study dance for another year in St. Petersburg. Summer-school students get the benefit of taking classes with the same teachers who work with academy students year-round. One of these, Angelina Armeiskaya, was a student at the Vaganova Academy and the lead character in the 1977 documentary film The Children of Theatre Street. Summer and academy students alike become the beneficiaries of a tradition, transmitted from student to teacher to student again -- minds meeting minds across the years. The academy also boasts a string of Prix de Lausanne and Varna medalists, including Michele Wiles, who dances for ABT, and Rasta Thomas.

Canada's National Ballet School, set in the vital arts community of downtown Toronto, provides access to overseas exchange in an international setting. The school has partnerships with twelve other ballet programs, including the Hamburg and Royal Ballet schools, that offer year-round senior students the opportunity to spend a summer in a ballet academy abroad. The program has evolved its own style, combining Vaganova, Bournonville, and Cecchetti, giving graduates a "clean line and exciting style, outstanding preparation for dancing with any company," says Artistic Director Mavis Staines.

The expanding facility includes residences, nine studios, a theater, pool, computer room, and physiotherapy clinic, all available for supervised use by summerschool students. For year-round students, the academy offers a full curriculum of requirements and electives, including French. In addition, students take courses in nutrition and overall body fitness. All students who wish to attend the academic program must audition and attend summer school first. It is a way for the dance school and the potential student to try each other out. "The atmosphere of learning is highly supportive," says one administrator. "The total package is a `home-away-from-home' along with exceptional training."

National Ballet School alumni are in high demand: Graduates dance at more than thirty-five companies around the world, Staines said. Audition tours are held each year, and about 25 percent of students admitted to the summer program are invited to attend the school, she said.

Another school to consider is the North Carolina School of the Arts. The campus sits in a mixed residential/warehouse district near historic downtown Winston-Salem, and it offers both a college-preparatory high school diploma and a bachelor of fine arts degree. The dancers share a large building with drama and music students. Because summer programs are offered in other areas of concentration beside dance, students meet contemporaries in other fields and share ideas. (During the school year, students from different disciplines even share dorm rooms.) At the conclusion of the five weeks of summer study, there's a demo performance, mostly for friends and families. In the year-round program, however, dancers perform for the public, both on campus and in a downtown theater. NCSA stages eighteen performances of The Nutcracker each December. Revenue from these performances funds scholarships. The department is also endowed with Lucia Chase and Nureyev Guest Artist fellowships.

A distinguished faculty, including NYCB's Melissa Hayden, Varna medalist Gyula Pandi, and Kirsten Simone of the Royal Danish Ballet, represents a variety of dance and teaching styles. "Most schools focus on a single style," says the school's dean, Susan McCollough, "Bournonville, Vaganova, Graham, Limon, Arthur Mitchell. We do that and more. Our faculty is diverse, and students show the effects by developing strength in multiple areas." The real focus is on perfecting technique, from step to movement. "Your knees have to kiss each other," Hayden told one group last summer. "Otherwise, it's not doing you any good." Students emerge with experience in Balanchine, RAD, de Mille, and Ailey, among others. "It makes you flexible to change," one student says. "I've gotten a lot stronger." Summer school is used for recruitment, while year-round students tend to broaden their horizons in other programs during the summer months. Graduates include Deanna Seay, Miami City Ballet; Linnette Hitchin, a retired principal at Pacific Northwest Ballet; and Jeanne Ruddy, Martha Graham Company.

So once you gather all the facts, how do you decide? One thing to think about is whether you're looking for exposure to a plethora of dance styles or in-depth concentration on one. Many bright, talented dancers with academic potential are happy in more diverse, less focused programs. Also, every school has a "personality." Administrators and teachers create a culture that is modeled in class and even in the dorms. You should look for programs that will challenge you -- but that also create an atmosphere where you enjoy learning and feel comfortable. Attending summer-study program auditions is a good way to check this out. Trying out for a program can teach you a lot, even if you don't get picked.

You might also want to consider other things, such as whether you'd prefer to study amid beautiful mountains or in a vibrant city. Is a small student-to-teacher ratio important? Does the program offer enough free time -- or too much?

And once you find the ideal place, it's important to remember that you still have to take responsibility for learning what's taught. "It's not enough just to appear," says Yoon, who decided to attend Kirov last summer and to put off year-round academy study until she's older. "It's hard, but it's fun, too. I don't think I really knew how much I love dance until I went there. If you're lucky, you get a lot of corrections. And nothing's better than hearing, after all that work, `That's right?'"

Colleen Payton teaches English and humanities at American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, Georgia, and writes for several dance publications.
