Stylish, but not up to scratch; GADGETS.

LIBRATONE BEAT pounds 550 ***

Is had to be on my guard reviewing this unique-looking wireless speaker unit as the cats kept mistaking it for a scratching post.

The 47cm-tall triangular Libratone Beat can stream music wirelessly from your Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

It comes with a USB dongle that shows up in Windows or OSX as another sound output, together with an Applefriendly s transmitter that plugs into the dock connector of your iDevice. There's also the option of connecting a non-Apple audio device via a 3.5mm socket. Aside from a single button for wireless pairing, the speaker is devoid of controls, with track changes and volume adjustments made via your output unit of choice.

While provide power, overly little in stereo s S li While the Beat provides plenty of power, the sound is overly trebley with little in the way of stereo separation.

Stylish and convenient, it's a shame the sound quality doesn't match the expectations raised by the Beat's good looks and its price tag.

If you're shopping within this bracket, the equally eye-catching Zeppelin Air is a better bet.
