Sturridge's recovery is real boost.

DANIEL STURRIDGE'S return to health, as he recovers from from viral meningitis, is a major boost as Team GB look for positives after Friday's 2-0 friendly defeat to gold medal favourites Brazil.

GB coach Stuart Pearce said: "Daniel Sturridge is going to be important for us. We are relieved he seems to be on the mend.

"He is a goalscorer and a good player.

"Daniel will be a vital member of this group - I thought that when he wasn't selected for the England squad for the Euros.

"I thought brilliant! He can come to the Olympics with us."

But Pearce admitted his heart sank when Sturridge was struck down with viral meningitis.

Pearce added: "When he said 'I've got viral meningitis,' it's not a great phone call to have when you have named the squad. But I am just pleased that he has got a smile on his face. He is desperate to be here and wouldn't want to miss this."

Pearce insists that he is not despondent about the Brazil reverse. He added: "We have to make sure we grow game by game and we get out the group stages and see where it takes us.

"All the friendly defeat has done is say that Brazil are some side and are favourites by right to take gold.

"Bolt is favourite to take 100m gold and this team are favourites to take the football gold."
