Stumbling on.

The people of Northern Ireland are well used to a peace process which lurches from crisis to crisis.

That's why the people of Northern Ireland are remaining optimistic despite the latest setback.

Unionists rejected out of hand the proposals on the handover of terrorists' weapons put forward by the British and Irish governments.

The DUP and UK Unionists have threatened a walk-out, but the Ulster Unionists seem to be willing to stay in and argue their case.

That's the nature of negotiation and that's why the people of Northern Ireland haven't given up hope.

And that's why they are not too despairing today.

Better to have a lurching, stumbling peace process than no peace process at all.
