Graduate students at Columbia Universityand Yale University held a strike April 18-22. The Graduate Employees and Student Organization is calling for the right to form labor unions and to have those unions recognized by the universities.
In 2004, the National Labor Relations Board ruled labor law protections no longer apply to graduate teachers at private universities. Graduate teachers can still form unions, but they are not protected by federal law.
