Stud duties next for hero Byway.

Byline: Richie O'Regan

PADDY POWER Irish Derby hero Bypass Byway has been retired to stud on a temporary basis and will commence duties almost immediately with Richie O'Regan.

The May 2000 son of Spiral Nikita and Sandy Penny established himself as a true superstar of the track scene when posting the brilliant new record time of 29.42sec for the 550 yards on Saturday night.

His victory brought his career record to 12 wins from 19 outings, and the 73lb black should be quite a hit with Irish breeders.

Owner Michael Kearney said yesterday: "We've decided to put him to stud for the winter. The plan would be to bring him back in time for next year's St Leger and then to go for the Champion Stakes and a bid for the Derby double.

"The night Bypass Byway won his first round heat of the Produce Stakes at Thurles, Richie congratulated me and remarked that he should make up into a lovely stud dog."
