New Trade Center Ready To Show Off Products From Arkansas

The long awaited Mid-South International Trade Center signed a lease in late November for office space and plans to open its doors to greet the world by the first week of January, 1991.

"The exhibit hall will open perhaps by the end of January with a minimum of 35 exhibits" says Mark Grobmyer, who led the campaign for the center. Grobmyer is an attorney in Little Rock with Arnold, Grobmyer & Haley.

"Some exhibits are already in storage and we are going back through our contact list lining up others," he says. The exhibit hall is designed to hold between 50 and 60 displays placed by both foreign and U.S. companies.

Little Rock welcomes more than 5,000 foreign visitors each year. Grobmyer says the organizations that bring these people here have made commitments to get them through the exhibit while they're in town.

Booth rental in the exhibit hall is $200/month, or $100/month for a smaller display. (For more information, contact the Mid-South Trade Association at 374-1957.)

Grobmyer says Arkansas has two competitive advantages over other states. The first is the Fulbright name. There are 100,000 Fulbright scholars worldwide that are business and government leaders in their respective countries.

"You say |Arkansas is where Fulbright is from' and that's a lot better than trying to explain where Iowa is," he says.

The second advantage is the name of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, says Grobmyer, especially when dealing with the Japanese or Koreans, because he did so much for their countries following World War II.

These two names "help psychologically set us apart from the other states."
