Strong performances as Cheshire win curtain-raisers.

CHESHIRE have opened the season with two wins in the traditional early season matches against Cheshire Ladies and the North Wales Counties.

At Ringway, the Ladies were unable to recover from losing all four of the opening foursomes. But they began a fightback in the afternoon singles with an early halved match for Rachel Goodall of Heswall and a 4&3 win for Bronte Law of Bramhall before the men went in front again.

Barry Barker (Reddish Vale) won 5&4, Caldy's Dominic Barnes won on the 18th and Jonathan Little of Heswall won 3&2. Gemma Clews of Delamere Forests won 3&2 to help restrict Cheshire's singles win to 4.5-3.5 - a strong fightback but after the morning session the attempted recovery in the afternoon was too much. The men won 8.5-3.5.

Cheshire halved the foursomes against North Wales Counties at Chirk but were too powerful for the Counties in the singles.

Jonathan Little from Heswall won 3&2 and Ray Hughes of Caldy won on the 18th green, Craig Lewis of Prenton won 3&2 and David Hird of Leasowe won 6&5 to help Cheshire win eight of the twelve singles. Cheshire won the match 12-6. ? The R&A have accepted a request from the Cheshire Union to include the County Strokeplay Championship in the World Amateur Golf Ranking from 2011.
