Strengthening the electricity distribution network in Benin.

Scope: The electricity sector in Benin is characterized by a high dependence -vis the countries of the subregion, straining to meet growing demand induced by the development of the country and a strong delay in terms of access to electricity. The deficit in electrical energy and low access to electricity today constitute strong constraints to growth in Benin and are a major issue in terms of poverty reduction. The Benin has a growing imbalance between the rapid development of urban areas and socio-economic situation of rural areas. Basic social infrastructure is not adequately equipped in terms of access to energy and are therefore not able to provide quality services to the people fairly. This project is part of energy policy defined by the Beninese government which seeks in particular to improve the means of distribution of electric energy and promote rural electrification. It is the heart of the AFD strategy in the energy sector, giving priority to the strengthening of energy systems and development of access in rural and suburban areas, and is perfectly in line with the objectives of access to electricity of the United Nations initiative "Sustainable Energy for All".

The purpose of the project is to contribute to economic growth and to reduce regional inequalities in the Atlantic department near the main city of Benin, Cotonou.

It aims to:

Improving the availability and quality of electricity to SBEE subscribers through better network reliability

Increasing access to electricity in the Atlantic department

The contribution to financial recovery SBEE by reducing technical and commercial losses

The project has two components:

A component of improving energy access in urban and peri-urban area via the rehabilitation and expansion of urban centers distribution networks of the town of Abomey and the Atlantic department, as well as an urban Attachment Programme

A rural electrification component enabling access to electricity for rural communities in the department of Atlntico.
