Stream of new items sates consumers' sweet tooth.

NEW YORK -- Just about everyone in the world has a sweet tooth, as is evident from the robust global candy market, which some estimates valued for 2016 at $85.5 billion, with an expected compound annual growth rate of 3.5% through 2022.

More evidence that most like to indulge in decadent treats is the assortment of new candy products that have come to the market this year.

In March, amid rumors that a new product launch was in the works, Reese's unveiled its Reese's Crunchy Cookie Cup --a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup stuffed with crunchy, chocolate cookie bits--which hit shelves in May.

"You could say this combination is 'cuptivating,'" said Ryan Riess, senior brand manager for Reese's Brand. "Reese's fanatics are one-of-a-kind. They have a love and devotion to the brand that is unlike anything I have ever seen, and have been buzzing at the potential thought of a new innovation from the brand."

Another new "bite size" treat comes from across the pond. The maker of M&M'S, Snickers and Twix has brought the U.K.'s No. 1 bite-size candy brand, Maltesers, to the U.S.--light, crispy candies dipped in chocolate with an airy center.

First hitting the market in England 80 years ago, Maltesers had a limited U.S. launch in select movie theaters in 2015, but it is now available at retailers across the country.

"Maltesers has been a favorite in the U.K. for decades, and over the years we've received many requests for Maltesers from fans in the U.S. who have tried it abroad," said Kerry Cavanaugh, brand director at Mars Chocolate North America. "We're thrilled to finally bring the product along with the brand's playful personality to a whole new set of fans stateside as a long-term addition to the Mars Chocolate portfolio."

Another new product to chew on comes from Bazooka Candy Brands, a division of Topps Co., which recently launched Juicy Drop Gum--"a one-of-a-kind gum that lets consumers boost and extend the flavor of their gum."

According to Bazooka, 83% of consumers are looking for gum with long-lasting flavor. And with Juicy Drop Gum, according to the company, consumers can determine their gum's flavor intensity and then extend their flavor by choosing the amount of sour gel they apply to each piece.

"Juicy Drop Gum will shake up the gum category by capitalizing on consumer desire for longer-lasting flavor, allowing consumers to create their very own delicious gum and gel combination that extends flavor and brings fun to every bite," said Rebecca Sotsky, Juicy Drop brand manager. "Juicy Drop is the only brand that lets consumers control the combination of sweet and sour tastes for a mind-blowing flavor experience."

Bazooka says the state-of-the-art, patent-pending packaging is unique in that it comes with a built-in gel flavor booster along with eight pieces of sweet bubble gum. Juicy Drop Gum is available in Knock-Out Punch, Blue Rebel, Apple Attack and Watermelon Blast and is available at checkout at retailers nationwide.

The effervescence and flavor of soda is the inspiration behind Hi-Chew Fizzies, manufactured by Morinaga America Inc., maker of Hi-Chew soft candy. Available in Cola and Orange Soda, Fizzies takes the nostalgic flavors enjoyed by children and adults and infuses them into the chewy texture Hi-Chew fans love.

For lovers of caramel--and there are many, according a recent Ipsos eNation survey that found 44% of American adults chose caramel as their favorite candy flavor to combine with chocolate--Werther's Original announced the brand's newest variety: Werther's Original Cocoa Creme Soft Caramels. Pairing the rich, creamy caramel fans know and love with a smooth, luxurious cocoa cream filling, this first-time flavor combination is the Werther's everyone has been waiting for, the company says.

Earlier this year, Just Born Quality Confections, maker of the candy brand PEEPS, debuted its newest product line at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Miami. PEEPS Delights is a new line of flavored marshmallow Chicks dipped in chocolate or fudge.

Other new confectionery products for 2017 include Honey Gummy Bears from Lovely Candy Co., which the company says is an industry first, featuring fewer calories and less sugar than other brands and with trace vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Storck, the global company behind Werther's Original, Riesen and merci, unveiled the 2017 U.S. rebrand of international favorite Toffifay, which brings together the tastes of caramel, chocolate and hazelnut.

And in April, American Licorice Co. celebrated National Licorice Day by launching the Red Vines California Collection, which includes seven Red Vines classic small-batch licorice pieces in a single package.
