The Rotaract Club Larnaca -- Kition will present two plays by the Russian playwright and short-story writer Anton Chekhov on Saturday to support the Iliaktida Zois foundation for children with special needs in Larnaca.
The two comedies, Bear and A Marriage Proposal, will be performed by members of PROVA Theatrical workshop, led by actor Christoforos Christoforou.
Bear is a one act play which tells the tale of Elena Ivanova Popova who has recently become a widow and Girgory Smirnov who comes to see the widow, demanding she settle a debt her late husband owes him, and will not leave until the money is paid.
The two get into an argument that leads to a debate about true love according to each gender. The debate becomes a shouting match and Popova insults Smirnov by calling him a bear. The name-calling continues until the two agree to a duel, which never actually happens, all that shouting leading instead to attraction.
A Marriage Proposal is again a play about two people whose argument brings them together. Ivan Vassiliyitch Lomov goes to his neighbour's house to propose to his daughter Natalia. While leading up to the proposal the couple fight and Lomov storms out. At that Natalia becomes hysterical and tells her father to run after him. Some more fighting ensues, but in the end kisses are given and the proposal is accepted.
